Math update with Mrs. Neal

Hello 3rd grade families,
This week in math we talk all about multiplication. We learned many different strategies for multiplication including equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting. The homework for this week will be as follows:

3rd grade:
Monday- IXL I.2
Tuesday- IXL I.4
Wednesday- Practice test, evens
Thursday- Practice math facts

11/6-11/9 Update with Mrs. Luyt

Reading: This week we determined the meanings of words and phrases used in texts and illustrations and distinguished literal from nonliteral meanings. On Thursday, we took a spelling test. If you child received a 1, please be sure to sign and return the test so I know you have seen it. Students will receive new spelling words on 11/13/17 (next assessment 11/30).  Next week, we will be using evidence based terms to answer questions after reading a short passage. We will also be reassessing their reading levels for the next two weeks. In addition, students will be having a Latin/Greek test on 11/16/17.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday. We also learned about dialogue in writing, and how to properly place quotation marks for dialogue. We will also discussed effective word choices in writing. On Thursday, we took an assessment on dialogue.   
Next week, students will be learning about narratives (personal and imagined), and how to choose a small moment of a bigger event that they will use to write a narrative in the coming weeks. 

Grammar: This week, we reviewed simple, compound, and complex sentences and discussed what makes each one different. We also reviewed subject and predicate, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions. On Wednesday, we took an assessment on the parts of speech. Next week, we will review simple, compound and complex sentences on Monday before we take the assessment. For the rest of the week, we will be reviewing regular and irregular verbs, and simple verb tenses. We will be taking an assessment on verbs on Thursday.

Projects: This week we continued with their "51st state." Next week, students will continue creating the components of their state. 

Homework: Read 20 minutes everyday. Study spelling words (assessment 11/30). Study Latin/Greek words for assessment  (assessment 11/16).

This week in math we wrapped up our work with addition and subtraction using partial sum and partial difference strategies. We will be moving on to multiplication this week. The homework will be as follows:

Mrs. Luyt's update for 10/30-11/2

We made it to November! Last week we had a fun and eventful Halloween on Tuesday. We participated in the school-wide costume parade, which was a lot of fun. We also had our class party where the kids played games, made a craft, and had yummy snacks. Thank you to all of you who provided items and/or time to the class. 

We also made a trip to the book fair. I sent home November's Scholastic Book Order forms, so if you weren't able to make it to the book fair and would like to order books, please do so before November 10th.

Reading: This week we reviewed character traits, point of view, context clues, plot structure, and themes. Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday. We also started an opinion piece on whether homemade or store bought costumes were best. This was an assessment to assess their opinion writing skills that we have been working on since the beginning of the year. Next week, students will be learning about dialogue in writing, and how to properly place quotation marks for dialogue. We will also discussing effective word choices in writing.   

Grammar: This week, we learned about subordinating conjunctions to combine one independent clause and one dependent clause to create a complex sentence. We also reviewed subject and predicate, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions. Next week, we will be reviewing simple, compound, and complex sentences and discussing what makes each one different.

Last week in math we focused on subtraction using partial difference. This week we will continue partial difference and review partial sum so please refer to the videos I posted earlier if you need help with those strategies. The homework for this week will be as follows:

Update from Mrs. Luyt 10/23-10/26/17

Halloween Day:

The Halloween parade at 10:45 a.m. If you would like to see the parade, please go to the lunch room so there is enough room for students to walk through the halls. 

Our class will also be going to the Book Fair on Tuesday afternoon. The students will be able to write down books they would like to have. I sent home a Book Fair Flyer on Thursday. The book fair is open October 30-November 2 from 7:45 a.m. - 8:45 a.m; 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.; 3:45 p.m.  - 4:30 p.m.; and Family Night on November 2 from 6-8 p.m. 

We will have a class party at 2:30 p.m. You are welcome to send in a treat if you wish. We have no allergies in our class.

On Thursday, we took a spelling test. If you child received a 1, please be sure to sign and return the test so I know you have seen it. Students will receive new spelling lists on 10/30/17. The next spelling test is 11/9/17. Next week, we will be reviewing character traits, point of view, context clues, plot structure, and themes. In addition, students will be having a Latin/Greek test on Thursday, 11/2.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday. We also finished our favorite animals opinion writing. Next week, students will be writing an opinion piece on their own to assess their writing skills.  

Grammar: This week, we learned about coordinating conjunctions, and reviewed nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and simple subject/predicates using a mentor sentence. Next week we will be learning about subordinating conjunctions to combine one independent clause and one dependent clause to create a compound sentence. We will also review subject and predicate, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions using our new mentor sentence.

Projects: This week we started coming up with their "51st state." Next week, students will continue creating the components of their state.
