11/6-11/9 Update with Mrs. Luyt

Reading: This week we determined the meanings of words and phrases used in texts and illustrations and distinguished literal from nonliteral meanings. On Thursday, we took a spelling test. If you child received a 1, please be sure to sign and return the test so I know you have seen it. Students will receive new spelling words on 11/13/17 (next assessment 11/30).  Next week, we will be using evidence based terms to answer questions after reading a short passage. We will also be reassessing their reading levels for the next two weeks. In addition, students will be having a Latin/Greek test on 11/16/17.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday. We also learned about dialogue in writing, and how to properly place quotation marks for dialogue. We will also discussed effective word choices in writing. On Thursday, we took an assessment on dialogue.
Next week, students will be learning about narratives (personal and imagined), and how to choose a small moment of a bigger event that they will use to write a narrative in the coming weeks.

Grammar: This week, we reviewed simple, compound, and complex sentences and discussed what makes each one different. We also reviewed subject and predicate, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions. On Wednesday, we took an assessment on the parts of speech. Next week, we will review simple, compound and complex sentences on Monday before we take the assessment. For the rest of the week, we will be reviewing regular and irregular verbs, and simple verb tenses. We will be taking an assessment on verbs on Thursday.

Projects: This week we continued with their "51st state." Next week, students will continue creating the components of their state.

Homework: Read 20 minutes everyday. Study spelling words (assessment 11/30). Study Latin/Greek words for assessment  (assessment 11/16).
