Mrs. Luyt's update for 10/30-11/2

We made it to November! Last week we had a fun and eventful Halloween on Tuesday. We participated in the school-wide costume parade, which was a lot of fun. We also had our class party where the kids played games, made a craft, and had yummy snacks. Thank you to all of you who provided items and/or time to the class.

We also made a trip to the book fair. I sent home November's Scholastic Book Order forms, so if you weren't able to make it to the book fair and would like to order books, please do so before November 10th.

REMEMBER TO TURN BACK YOUR CLOCKS ON SUNDAY FOR DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!

Reading: This week we reviewed character traits, point of view, context clues, plot structure, and themes. On Thursday, we took a Latin/Greek test. If you child received a 1, please be sure to sign and return the test so I know you have seen it. Students will receive new Latin/Greek Words on 11/6/17 (next assessment 11/16).  Next week, we will be determining the meanings of words and phrases used in texts and illustrations and distinguish literal from nonliteral meanings. In addition, students will be having a spelling test on 11/9/17.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday. We also started an opinion piece on whether homemade or store bought costumes were best. This was an assessment to assess their opinion writing skills that we have been working on since the beginning of the year. Next week, students will be learning about dialogue in writing, and how to properly place quotation marks for dialogue. We will also discussing effective word choices in writing.

Grammar: This week, we learned about subordinating conjunctions to combine one independent clause and one dependent clause to create a complex sentence. We also reviewed subject and predicate, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs and coordinating conjunctions. Next week, we will be reviewing simple, compound, and complex sentences and discussing what makes each one different.

Projects: This week we continued with their "51st state." Next week, students will continue creating the components of their state.

Homework: Read 20 minutes everyday. Study spelling words (assessment 11/9). Study Latin/Greek words for assessment  (assessment 11/16).
