Update with Mrs. Luyt 4/9-4/12/18

Reading:  Last week we compared and contrasted the important points from two texts on the same subject. We also gave out new spelling lists. Next week, we will be learning about the author's point of view in texts. We will also be adding new Latin/Greek words next week. The spelling test will be on 4/19/18. 

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, started a writings from all of the formats we have learned this year: opinion, narrative, and informational. We will continue working on this for the next two weeks.

Grammar:  Last week, we reviewed subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, and simple, compound, and complex sentences. For the rest of the year, we will be reviewing all of the concepts we have learned this year. I will be reassessing any student that received a 1 or 2 on previous assessments.

Projects: Last week we prepared for our student-led conferences. Next week, we will begin our Market Day project. We will start off by learning economic vocabulary and will discuss wants verses needs. 

Homework: Read 20 minutes everyday and study for test.

Mrs. Luyt Update 3/26-3/29/18

I hope you all enjoy your spring break with your kids! 

Reading:  Last week we continued to learn about the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts.When we get back from break, we will be comparing and contrasting the important points from two texts on the same subject. We will also give out new spelling lists. The spelling test will be on 4/19/18. 

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, started a new informational writing on Abraham Lincoln. When we return, we will be doing writings from all of the formats we have learned this year: opinion, narrative, and informational. 

Grammar:  Last week, we reviewed parts of speech. When we return, we will be reviewing subordinating and coordinating conjunctions, and simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Projects: Last week we put the finishing touches on the projects and practiced presentations for the presentation on Thursday. When we return from break, we will be preparing for our student-led conferences. 

Homework: Read 20 minutes everyday and study for test. 

Conferences will be on Friday, April 13th, from 8am-1pm. It is an open house style. Come anytime during those hours with your child.

3/19-3/22/18 Update with Mrs. Luyt

3rd Grade will be presenting their animal adaptation projects on Thursday, 3/29, from 2:30-3:30 in the lunch room. Please come and see their hard work!

Reading:  Last week we learned about the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts.We will continue to work on the main idea this week. There will be no new spelling words until after spring break. Latin/Greek test on 3/29/18.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, we continued  to write rough drafts, revising and editing, and begin to format our final draft about our informational writing on deep see creatures. This week we will start a new informational writing on Abraham Lincoln.

Grammar:  Last week, we reviewed  punctuation in dialogue. Next week, we will review parts of speech.

Projects: Last week we finished our habitats and start on our animal creations. Next week, we will put any finishing touches on the projects and practice presentations for Thursday's presentation.

3/12-3/15 Mrs. Luyt update

Reading:  Last week we worked on 2nd Trimester assessments and introduced new spelling words for a test on 3/22/18.  We also went over the text structure compare and contrast. We took our Latin/Greek test on Thursday. This week we will introduce new Latin/Greek words for a test on 3/29/18. We will also be learning about the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts. Spelling test on 3/22/18.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, we continued  to write rough drafts, revising and editing, and begin to format our final draft about our informational writing on deep see creatures. This week we will continue working on our final drafts and foldable brochures on sea creatures.

Grammar:  Last week, we reviewed possessive nouns. Next week, we will be reviewing  punctuation in dialogue.

Projects: Last week we began our shoe box habitats. Next week, we will finish our habitats and start on our animal creations.

Update with Mrs. Luyt 3/5-3/8/18

This week we will continue working on our final drafts and foldable brochures on sea creatures.

Grammar:  Last week, we learned about how to use commas in addresses. Next week, we will be reviewing possessive nouns.

Projects: Last week we began putting poster boards together with the information about each animal part and started our shoe box habitats. Next week, we will finish our habitats and start on our animal creations.

Update with Mrs. Luyt 2/26-3/1/18

Reading:  Last week we introduced text structures chronological order and introduced new spelling words for a test on 3/8/18.  We took our Latin/Greek test on Thursday. This week we will introduce new Latin/Greek words for a test on 3/15/18. We will also be introducing  text structures description and compare and contrast. Spelling test on 3/8/18.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, we continued  to write rough drafts, revising and editing, and begin to format our final draft about our informational writing on deep see creatures. This week we will continue working on our final drafts and foldable brochures on sea creaturs.

Grammar:  Last week, we learned about dictionary skills. This week, we will learn how to use commas in addresses.

Projects: Last week we began putting together animal parts to make animal creations that will fit in with their chosen habitat. Next week, we will be working on putting poster boards together with the information about each animal part. We are still in need of a couple of shoe boxes for our habitats that we will be starting very soon. If you have any extras, please send them in next week.

Mrs. Luyt Update 2/22-2/26/18

3rd Grade will be taking Winter MAPS testing on Tuesday during our normal writing time (8:10 a.m.). We will test for about an hour on Tuesday and for those students that do not finish in that time, we will continue testing into Wednesday's regular writing period. You can help by making sure your child is at school on time, gets a good night's rest the night before and a good breakfast in the morning.

Reading:  Last week we introduced text structures cause and effect and problem and solution. We also introduced new Latin/Greek words for a test on 3/1/18. We will be introducing new spelling words this week. In addition, we will be introducing text structures chronological order and compare and contrast. Latin/Greek test on 2/22/18.

Writing: We continue to practice cursive everyday.  Last week, we continued  to write rough drafts, revising and editing, and begin to format our final draft about our informational writing on deep see creatures.

Grammar:  Last week, we did practice tests for our MAPS testing coming up next week. Next week, we will be working on dictionary skills.
